I love to decorate sugar cookies, except no one want to eat them “because they are too pretty”, said people.  They last for a month or so, if stored properly.  I think the older they gets, the better they taste. (well, as long as they are not rotten old).  Today, I am sharing with you my royal icing and sugar cookie recipes.  I have learned so much in cookie decorating from these two ladies.  Let’s go back a little bit.  What is Royal Icing?  It’s just like butter cream, or thinner in the beginning and it gets hardened.

Before I continue, I want to share my daughter’s artificial cake that I made with royal icings. She just turned 3 and I wanted to make her a ‘Forever Friend’ theme cake.

Now back to Royal Icing and Sugar Cookie.

I have tried tons of sugar icing recipes and the best by far is from Glorious Treats.

Rolled Sugar Cookies

3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
1 cup sugar
1 large egg
1 teaspoon good quality vanilla extract.  Click HERE for step by step directions.

I also love the simplicity of her Royal Icing recipe.

Royal Icing Recipe

4 Tablespoons Meringue Powder (I use Wilton Brand)

4 cups (about 1 pound) powdered sugar

6 Tablespoons warm water (to start, see additional notes below)

Beat all ingredients until stiff peaks form.  Click HERE for decoration tutorial.

Another good recipe and tutorial is from Sweetopia.  I keep her illustration in my kitchen because it’s super duper cute.
